What's New in Oxford Islamic Studies Online
A variety of regular updates and site enhancements are scheduled for Oxford Islamic Studies Online [OISO]. One of the most exciting aspects of the current update program is that subscribers can access a growing number of new articles from Editor-in-Chief John L. Esposito's forthcoming The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World. The site launched with some 200 new articles from this major reference work, with more being loaded as content updates throughout the year. These articles will be available exclusively online until the six-volume print set publishes in 2009.

October 2008
This month brings a wealth of new content to Oxford Islamic Studies Online. An additional 300 new and revised articles from the forthcoming Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World are now featured on the site, as we continue to expand our coverage of people, places, events and concepts from all periods of Islamic history. This new scholarly content is enhanced by approximately 50 new images of art, architecture, and individuals from the Islamic world. Finally, we are pleased to announce the addition of a new thematic guide, The Geography of the Islamic World, which provides quick and easy access to the more than 40 full-color maps and 20 thematic articles selected from the Atlas of the World's Religions.

One of the most renowned scholars in the field of Islamic studies in the United States, Editor in Chief John L. Esposito provides a regular commentary for visitors to the site. His letters are an introduction to the spirit, aims and scope of this unprecedented project, which aims to fulfill the Oxford University Press mission of combining the best in authoritative scholarship with cutting edge online resources devoted to the education, ease, and comfort of users at a wide range of levels. Focus On
Each update also brings a new Focus On essay. Designed to stimulate thought and enhance understanding of vital aspects of the Islamic world, these original articles are commissioned by the editors of Oxford Islamic Studies Online and written by some of the most highly-regarded scholars in the field. Each essay provides recommended links to further information on the topic, including major articles within the site. This month, leading Islam scholar James Piscatori examines what happens when Islamists rise to power through elections and the effect it has both on the country, and also on the Islamists themselves.
The current Focus On essay is freely available online. The public can access the content of all Focus On essays, and use the Related Reading links for a current feature.
